How Many Wet Diapers Should a Newborn Have?

It changes every day for the first week — then levels off at 6–8 per day.

Day one? Just one wet diaper is fine. By day five, you're looking for at least six. Here's the full day-by-day breakdown so you know exactly what to expect.

Wet Diaper Chart — Day by Day
Day 1
Wet Diapers (min)1+
Dirty Diapers1+ (black, tarry meconium)
NotesColostrum is small in volume but packed with what baby needs
Day 2
Wet Diapers (min)2+
Dirty Diapers1–2 (dark green/black)
NotesStill meconium — this is normal and expected
Day 3
Wet Diapers (min)3+
Dirty Diapers2–3 (transitioning to green/brown)
NotesMilk is coming in. Diapers start picking up.
Day 4
Wet Diapers (min)4+

NotesThis is the turning point — 6+ wet diapers from here on
Day 6

Days 11–14
Wet Diapers (min)6–8
Dirty Diapers3+ (frequency varies)
NotesBy day 14, baby should be at or above birth weight
These minimums are based on general pediatric guidelines. Every baby is a little different — if you're concerned, bring your diaper log to your pediatrician.

Dehydration Warning Signs

  • Fewer wet diapers than expected for their age (see chart above)
  • Dark yellow or amber-colored urine
  • Dry mouth or cracked lips
  • Sunken fontanelle (the soft spot on top of the head feels dipped in)
  • No tears when crying
  • Baby is unusually sleepy, limp, or hard to wake for feeds
  • Brick-red or orange-colored spots in the diaper (urate crystals — normal on day 1–2 only)

If you notice any of these, contact your pediatrician right away. Newborns can dehydrate quickly.

Signs Your Baby Is Well-Hydrated

  • 6 or more wet diapers per day after day 5
  • Urine is pale yellow or clear — not dark or concentrated
  • Baby seems satisfied and relaxed after feeds
  • Steady weight gain (back to birth weight by about 10–14 days)
  • Soft spot on the head looks flat or slightly raised, not sunken
  • Baby has good skin turgor — skin bounces back when gently pinched

Diaper Counting Tips

Log every change right when it happens

You'll forget by the next feed. Seriously. Just open the app or mark the diaper the second you change it. Future-you at the 3 AM feeding will be grateful.

Mark a small dot on each wet diaper

If you're not using an app, grab a Sharpie and put a dot on the front of each wet diaper before you toss it. At the end of the day, count the dots in the trash. Low-tech but it works.

Know the difference between wet and just damp

Modern diapers are really absorbent, so it can be hard to tell. A wet diaper should feel noticeably heavier than a dry one. If you're unsure, pour 2–3 tablespoons of water into a clean diaper — that's roughly what one pee feels like.

Don't panic about poop frequency after month one

After the first month, breastfed babies can go anywhere from multiple times a day to once every 7–10 days. Formula-fed babies tend to be more regular. Wet diapers are the better hydration indicator.
